*blows dust off LJ* So apparently I haven't posted anything since July. O.o There's no real excuse, I've just been lazy and had nothing to say. (Not that I ever have much to say, really.)
Anyway, I wanted to show a couple of pictures from Halloween. One is from Saturday, from the Federal Hill-o-ween bar crawl and the other is from Sunday, from the benefit event at Westminster Hall. (Yeah, that sounds like some horrible, unbearably stuffy thing, I know. It was actually fun and consisted of actors telling several ghost/horror stories by Poe, Lovecraft and Bram Stoker.) The one from Westminster Hall was actually taken by a photographer from the Baltimore Sun and made it into an online gallery for the event. (She took twenty or thirty photos of me-it was kind of weird. XD)

Big surprise, I was a vampire for Halloween. (I think I may have a problem. The first step is admitting it, right? XD) an actual surprise was how much attention (and how many adults I scared the hell out of throughout the weekend.)

That's the one from the bar crawl. I was more or less going for something resembling Seventies Spike. I think it worked. It was sort of a combination of Spike and David from The Lost Boys, really. Pretty much all day Saturday and Monday (Sunday I went with the long blonde wig because it looked better with the dress than the spiky Billy Idol 'do), I got one or the other from people who knew what those two characters looked like, which was pretty cool.

The other one, because I don't feel like buying it, is:
I really like the lighting there. (I was standing almost on top of a light set into the brick walkway.)

In non-holiday stuff, I have been baking lately. I have no idea why, I just seem to have random periods of wanting to bake ALL THE THINGS. First it was a cheesecake (which I stole from a catalog-vanilla cheesecake with butterscotch and chocolate chips, pecans, and a chocolate crust, if you care), now it's red velvet cake cookies. I have no idea what will be next. Cake? More cookies? Cheesecake again? It will be something delicious, anyway.
(By the way, the cookie recipe is here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3060399/Cake%20Cookie%20Recipes.pdf Try them! They're seriously good. I added a tablespoon of cocoa powder and used two kinds of chocolate chips the last time I made them, but you can put other things in them, too. I've done walnuts, pecans, and raisins in various batches and they always come out nicely. Just don't let them bake too long or they get dry.)

Also, I have decided that I will be casting my gas mask after all. I've already got all the straps and rivets and lining bits taken off so I can st just the mask, and have done a little tweaking so that the lenses will fit properly. I found a mini resin casting starter kit from Alumilite for $16, so I'm getting it. It looks like it will be enough for at least one cast of the mask, which is all I need right now. I'm only doing a test.

I decided that foam and plastic didn't actually make very good looking lenses, so I got some of those little aluminum tins with the clear tops. They're a smaller size of the same thing I used for the filter holder, and they actually worked out almost perfectly. I didn't have to cut new lenses to stick in them, and they'll be more durable than the plastic lenses would be. (I occasionally have flashes of brilliance, and this was one of them.) They did require a little snipping of the edges to make them fit all the way over the eyeholes in the mask, but don't really care. I can touch up the mask itself with silver paint and the cut places will be less obvious.

By the way, can I just give a big "screw you" to the makers of DAS modelling material? It's like paperclay, except really bloody useless, as I unfortunately discovered. I got some to make another mask with, since the store didn't have any paperclay. It looked like paperclay when I opened the package. It pretty much felt like paperclay. It did not, however, behave like paperclay. It started drying out really quickly. It cracked as it dried, cracked more when I tried to bake it, and fell apart when I attempted to fix it. I wasn't trying to build anything big or complicated, but it completely fell apart, and I like to think that I am capable of properly using a block of clay, so I'm pretty sure the problem wasn't on my part. Apparently people like this stuff, so maybe I just got a bad package? I dunno, but it didn't work.

Your photo is awesome. You really out did yourself this year for Halloween and you look like you had a blast doing it.

Awesome recipe as well. Thanks for sharing. I've been in the baking/cooking mood as well. It might be the cooler weather and the fact that it's not too killer hot to turn on the oven. I'm thinking of giving some soft salted caramels a try this holiday. I've never made candy before other than marzipan but I think I'm going to give it a go.

Let me know what you think of Alumilite. I've only used Smooth On in all my years of casting. It would be interesting to hear what you think of it.

Thanks! It was so much fun. There are a number of pictures of me biting people somewhere out there on the internet. XD

You're welcome. :) That may be it-it's been way too warm most of the year to do much, so now's a good time for baking. That sounds delicious! I hope it goes well-caramels can be finicky. I've got a great-aunt's fudge recipe that I've been meaning to try out,so I may be doing a bit of candymaking myself.

Will do.

Your costume is epic O.O looks like halloween was lots of fun.

I'm also going through a period of BAKE ALL THE THINGS. Especially pumpkin things.

DAS modelling material is crap. I used it once and pretty much the same thing happened :/

It so was. I got dragged around by a random group of people who claimed me as their Spike for the night. There are also a bunch of photos of me biting various people somewhere out there on teh internetz. I kept getting stopped for pictures and having people ask to be bitten. It's a bitch when people have to lean down for you to reach their necks. XD

Ooh, pumpkin! I keep meaning to make a pumpkin cheesecake or something.

Glad it's not just me, then. That shit reeks, too. Totally useless. :/
